Where can I find bilingual education help?
Bilingual education--classes taught in a child’s native language while the student is learning English--is not offered in every school or school district. However, every school is required to have an English as a Second Language (ESL) program.
To get ESL or Bilingual help you must fill out a Home Language Survey. If a language other than English is spoken at home, your child is required to take a Language Assessment Battery-Revised (LAB-R) test. If he or she scores below the 41%, he or she is required to take an ESL or Bilingual class and must be placed in a class within 10 days of enrolling in school.
Parents can decided if they want their children to take a Bilingual class or an ESL class. If the school or district does not offer the Bilingual class, you can transfer your child to another school that does.
